From a young age, Monica Arceo Mendoza was aware of a lack of decent, affordable housing. "My family still struggles with housing insecurity today and it is an issue that is not unique to our family," she says. Her experience led her to California Coalition of Rural Housing’s (CCRH) Internship Program for Diversity in Nonprofit Housing and Community Development.

Lorena Arechiga-Playo was eager to join a matched savings program when she found one being offered through East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) in Oakland, California. She knew such a program, where a lender or nonprofit pledges to match a certain amount of what a client puts into savings, would increase her savings efforts. 

Chinatown's alleyways in San Francisco are a link to its history and Chinatown CDC's youth participants knows this. They've provided tours and connected to that rich history for decades. "It started in 2001 as a neighborhood advocacy project," shares Veronica Seng, community organizer. "The alleyways in this neighborhood were not very clean or safe. The kids graded the alleyways and brought it to the city's attention."

When RUPCO began developing Energy Square at the site of a former bowling alley in Kingston, New York, the goal was to incorporate space for a creative arts center along with space for 57 rental apartments. But the goal of making the building "net zero for living" was always in the back of leaders' minds.
