Noelia Castro Ramirez remembers the calls she got from clients in February. They'd lost income because of the pandemic and had not been able to recover, she says. "They used their savings up to the point where there was none left." Their mortgage was three months past due. "At some point, the wife cried on the phone."

For decades, residents in West Baltimore have had to travel if they wanted to sit down to a restaurant dinner with their families. "Those of us with cars could go somewhere else," recalls Jacqueline Caldwell, who grew up in the area. "But if you didn't have transportation, there was nothing besides the Chicken Box on the corner."

The new Mill on North Food Hall, set to be completed this summer, will change that.

Preeya Subedi has always had an interest in public health. Next year, she plans to go to medical school to start her studies, with a goal of becoming a doctor. But between graduating from the University of Maryland and beginning medical school, she wanted a job that would remind her of the needs of the people she'll eventually help as a doctor.

Just before COVID-19 hit, and with it, the stay-at-home orders, Dora Kellogg was in a car accident. Her car was totaled, she says. She had pain on her right side. She had pain on her left side. Kellogg also has asthma and heart disease. The combination prompted her doctor to insist that she stay home from her daily job.
