Resident Leadership & Community Engagement

Stronger leadership, resident voices missing in affordable housing conversations

A lack of affordable housing is a significant concern for most Americans. Few agree that there is strong or sufficient leadership speaking for affordable housing in their communities, or that their voices are being heard on the issue. They are most likely to point to state policymakers as responsible for increasing affordable housing opportunities, although many see local policymakers and members of their own community as responsible too. Americans point to myriad solutions to affordable housing and hope to see more members of their own communities voicing their support for it in the future. Social Isolation & Community Connections

Social isolation critically impacts people living in urban areas, lower-income Americans, and Black and Hispanic communities

As the World Health Organization (WHO) calls loneliness a ‘pressing health threat’ with health effects as bad as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, social isolation is top of mind for many Americans. While most Americans feel a sense of community through their family, friends, or other sources, the impacts of social isolation are particularly felt among historically marginalized groups, including lower-income Americans and Black and Hispanic communities, and those living in urban areas. Americans point to solutions like increasing access to housing, food/groceries, and health care; and creating more communal and green/nature spaces.
