NR225 By the Numbers: Understanding Inequality and Opportunity

This hands-on analysis course will introduce you to a variety of information sources and analytic techniques that you can use to better understand your community. As community developers we need to know: Where are jobs located relative to where low-income people live? How are people of color, women, and other demographic groups faring in the mortgage and labor markets? Is enough affordable housing located in “high-opportunity” neighborhoods? What makes for a “high-opportunity” neighborhood? We will walk through data analysis exercises that provide answers to these and similar social inequality and opportunity questions, using real data from real cities as case studies. You will learn about web-based tools to access and process data, and learn the basics of how to use open-source statistical and mapping software to gain new insights into your community. The workshop will emphasize best practices and key pitfalls to avoid as a data analyst, regardless of the topic you are researching. This is an advanced course, participants should be comfortable calculating percentages, averages, and the slope of a line. While no prior experience with data analysis software is required, some background working with Excel or with database programs is helpful to have.
