ED245sv Community Wealth Building: An Introduction

Offering an exciting new model and practice in economic development, community wealth building (CWB) is growing fast in the United States as well as many places around the world. With a focus on a re-rooting of wealth and investment flows through democratic ownership models, CWB is a tool for building an economy that is inclusive, resilience and just.

This introductory course will equip you with the knowledge, ideas, and action planning framework to advance CWB in your community. Specifically, the course will:

  • Explore the prevailing challenges our communities face and how CWB addresses them;
  • Introduce the conceptual underpinning of CWB;
  • Explain the CWB model and its five pillars;
  • Guide you through the action planning process, equipping you with the know-how and skills to get you started;
  • Provide you with useful case studies from around the world;
  • Connect CWB with specific models of common ownership, including shared equity housing (SEH).

This will be an interactive two-day experience, with ample time for hands-on work, workshopping, questioning and discussion. The course includes a required half-day site visit to see CWB work in action -- providing a solid grounding for follow-on courses related to asset building and development, shared equity housing, community finance, development policy and more.
