CP265 Universal Design and Visitability in Affordable Housing

The course enables nonprofit housers to develop flexible policy options to promote design, materials and methods choices which will allow for easier, safer and more sustainable use of housing regardless of the age or ability of the occupant. This two-day course will clarify issues of universal design, visitability and accessibility in affordable housing production from a nonprofit practitioner’s point of view. Principles of universal design and key elements of visitability will be illustrated using photographs, plans, engineering drawings and a virtual tour of a house. Low cost and no-cost options, as well as intergration of universal design and visitability with green and energy efficient measures are featured. A fast-growing number of local visitability ordinances and increasing universal design requirements from state funding agencies, as well as market demand trends in an aging population, make knowledgeable application of the skills learned in this workshop a vital part of continued success in affordable housing production.
