HO104el HECM: Counseling Basics Overview

Today's growing aging population is creating renewed interest and demand for reverse mortgage products, especially HUD's Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM). Counseling organizations interested in starting or expanding a HECM counseling program can increase knowledge of the fundamentals of this program through this online course. This entry-level course will focus on an overview of reverse mortgages including HECM, counseling requirements, identifying financial and housing alternatives and options for senior clients facing financial hardship.

HO104el is designed to provide baseline information for individuals with some general counseling experience (at least 9 - 12 months) interested in pursuing HECM counseling. It is suggested as a prerequisite to the HECM classroom course series, Introduction to HECM Counseling (HO111) 5 days; Introduction to HUD's HECM Counseling Program Procedures and Roster (HO272) 1 day, and Reverse Mortgage Counseling: Case Study Practicum (HO275) 2 days. For individuals with limited general counseling experience. This course provides 2.5 hours of continuing education.
